How exactly does Wegovy® work?
Semaglutide acts as a GLP (glucagon-like peptide)-1 receptor agonist. By stimulating insulin secretion and inhibiting glucagon secretion, it lowers blood sugar levels in a glucose-dependent manner. Semaglutide also slows gastric emptying and thereby increases the feeling of satiety. At the central nervous level, semaglutide increases control over eating behavior and reduces food cravings.
Who is Wegovy® suitable for?
Wegovy® (semaglutide) is approved for weight management, in addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity
- in adults with obesity and a BMI (body mass index) ≥ 30 kg/m²
- in adults who are overweight (BMI of 27 to 30 kg/m²) and at least one weight-related comorbidity
- in young people aged 12 and over with obesity (according to gender and age-specific growth tables) and a body weight over 60 kg.
When assessing whether Wegovy® is right for you, we always keep the overall picture in mind and always decide individually whether therapy makes sense for you.
How does your initial consultation with us go before therapy with Wegovy®?
At your first appointment with us before possible therapy with Wegovy®, we will talk in detail about the following topics:
- Your current weight and your weight history
- So far there have been diets and weight loss attempts
- Your current eating habits
- Your current movement profile
- Your medical history and any accompanying medication - please bring a current complete blood count with you (not older than 3 months. If not available, we can also do this in-house)
- Your psychosocial condition
- Your goals
If we decide together that Wegovy® is suitable for you, you will receive your prescription for the first 3 months.
How is Wegovy® used?
Wegovy® is injected under your skin using a pre-filled pen (injection pen) and a very thin needle once a week. Typical injection sites are the stomach or thighs.
For whom is Wegovy® not suitable?
- Wegovy® is not suitable for people of normal weight who want to further reduce their weight for various reasons.
- Wegovy® is intended to promote the transition to a healthier lifestyle overall. It is therefore not suitable for people who do not have the willingness or motivation to do so.
How much does therapy with Wegovy® cost?
Unfortunately, advice on and prescription of Wegovy® is not reimbursed by statutory health insurance companies, even though obesity is a serious illness with serious consequences.
We charge around €200 per quarter for a detailed consultation and, if necessary, a physical examination. This includes all necessary consultations and queries within one quarter.
If no current complete blood count is available, these costs may be added.
The monthly cost of the Wegovy® preparation is around €170.
Most private health insurance companies cover the consultation costs completely. The reimbursement of the preparation must be agreed with your private health insurance company in individual cases.
